Christmas markets & events: Ensuring safe mobile power supply with rechargeable batteries

Mobile power supply at Christmas markets

Christmas markets, winter festivals and open-air events are hugely popular – often during the cold season and in locations without fixed power connections. Mobile battery systems are increasingly being used instead of diesel generators to reliably supply energy to stalls, lighting, radiant heaters, music or sales equipment.

The advantage: they are emission-free, quiet and flexible. However, lithium-ion batteries also pose risks such as overheating, fire or short circuits. To ensure that event organisers and stall operators are on the safe side, certain rules should be followed.

Which batteries are suitable for Christmas markets?

Mobile power storage units are available in various performance classes – from smaller battery boxes for individual stands to larger battery containers for entire event areas. As a general rule:

  • Smaller battery systems up to approx. 2 kWh are suitable for lighting, cash register systems or small kitchen appliances.
  • Medium-sized storage units between 2–10 kWh can supply several stands, even those with hot plates or coffee machines.
  • Large container solutions from 10 kWh offer an alternative to diesel generators for stages, sound systems or entire market areas.

It is important that the systems are certified for professional use (e.g. CE marking, tested fire safety standards).

Safety rules for operation

To ensure that the batteries run safely, organisers and operators should note the following points:

  • Location: Never operate batteries in closed booths or tents. They need good ventilation and protection from moisture.
  • Fire protection: Fire extinguishers (ideally suitable for lithium fires) must be within reach.
  • Supervision: Do not leave batteries charging unattended and check them regularly for damage.
  • Cabling: Use splash-proof cables and sockets (IP44 or higher).
  • Labelling: Batteries must clearly indicate their capacity (Wh) and voltage (V).
  • Transport: Only transport batteries in approved transport boxes or cases.

Mobile batteries vs. diesel generators

Many markets are consciously switching from generators to batteries – and not just because of emissions. Public acceptance is also growing: no exhaust fumes, no loud engines, just a clean power supply.

Systems such as the RETRON BOX allow batteries to be stored, transported and operated safely. Fireproof containers protect against fires, and modular sizes make them flexible for use at both small and large events.

Whether at Christmas markets or festivals, mobile batteries offer a sustainable and quiet alternative to traditional power supplies. Choosing the right systems and paying attention to safety ensures that visitors can relax and enjoy mulled wine, music and lights – without risk.
