Storing e-bikes and e-scooters in the stairwell
Electric bikes and e-scooters parked in the stairwell are a nuisance for many tenants because they are in the way. Owners, on the other hand, need a safe place to store their e-scooters or e-bikes and therefore wonder whether they are allowed to park them in the stairwell or hallway.
The answer is: it is normally forbidden to store e-bikes and e-scooters in the stairwell. The most important reason for this is fire safety. Even normal bicycles or scooters can block the stairwell as an escape route or at least become a tripping hazard for people trying to escape and firefighters. In the case of e-bikes and e-scooters, they also increase the fire load in the event of a fire and can even start a fire themselves. Especially during the charging process - but not only then - the built-in lithium-ion batteries can ignite themselves. Then - and also if they have been set on fire by an external fire - toxic, hot gases can escape explosively from the battery housing, making the stairwell impassable without breathing protection.
Good to know: The landlord must ensure that parking spaces for bicycles are available in the building or nearby. However, it is also reasonable for tenants to store their bicycles in their own cellar compartment. Unlike pushchairs and mobility walkers, bicycle users are usually physically able to carry a bicycle into the cellar.
E-scooters, on the other hand, are so small that they can usually be taken into the apartment.
If you want to charge and store the lithium-ion battery of your e-bike or e-scooter safely, you can use our RETRON BOX. This protects against the spread of flames in the event of a battery fire.
