How should lithium-ion batteries be stored?

Basically, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed when storing lithium-ion batteries. The optimal storage conditions can vary from model to model. However, there are some basic rules that can be followed.

Batteries should not be left in the device, especially when stored for long periods, as many devices consume power even when switched off and can cause deep discharge. Therefore, it is recommended to store lithium-ion batteries in a medium charge state to minimize the risk of "thermal runaway" of the battery.

You should store your lithium-ion batteries in a cool and dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight but also protect the lithium-ion batteries from frost.

Special requirements for the storage of e-bike batteries

Basically, the same principles apply to the storage of bicycle batteries (and the batteries of e-scooters, hoverboards, Segways, etc.) as to other lithium-ion batteries. However, there are some special requirements when storing e-bike batteries:

Temperature sensitivity

E-bike batteries should be stored at specific temperatures to maintain their performance and lifespan. Incorrect storage can lead to faster discharge or damage to the battery.

Fixed battery

With some e-bikes you cannot remove the battery and therefore it cannot stored separately. This makes safe (e. g. frost-free) storage more difficult and increases the risk of a deep discharge.

Powerful e-bike batteries

In comparison to smartphones or laptops, bicycle batteries usually have a much higher capacity, so they can also release more energy in the event of a fire. Therefore, they should be best stored and recharged in a battery protection box.

Damaged or swollen batteries and rechargeable batteries are a danger and should not be stored for long periods by individuals or businesses.
